presidential candidate mitt romney both campaign in the battleground state of virginia today after nearly crossing paths in another key swing state, ohio. nbc's tracie potts is joining from us washington with those details. good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. virginia, four years ago, the president won that state after 44 years of voters there selecting republicans, but then ey flipped and switched their democratic governor for a republican, so, some back and forth in virginia, and now the president hopes to win that state back. president obama and mitt romney campaign in virginia today, where median income is 23% higher than the national average, and unemployment's way lower, under 6%. like ohio wednesday, the president's expected to hammer romney for his comments on the 47% of voters who don't pay taxes. >> i don't know how many of you will be with me this time around, but -- but it doesn't matter, because i'm running to be your president, to represent everybody. >> we're going to help those that need our help. we're a compassionate people. >> reporter: romney's ten points be

romney in battleground states most likely to decide the election. a poll of voters in colorado, virginia and wisconsin shows a virtual tie in colorado with president obama ahead by one point, a six point swing from the last poll in august. in virginia the president holds a four point lead and is now over 50%. and in wisconsin the president maintains the same 51-45% lead he did august 8th and wiped out the gains romney made after adding paul ryan to the ticket. the president has gained the most in an area that's been romney's strongest point who would do a better job on the economy. the president wiped out a ten-point disadvantage on that question in colorado and has now taken the lead in virginia and wisconsin. romney's dip in the polls comes at a time when he's been knocked off message by a secretly recorded video of him speaking at a fundraiser >> 47% with him who are dependent upon the government. >> reporter: in the tape romney said 47% of americans pay no income taxes, believe they are victims entitled to government help and will vote for president obama no matter what. >> my job is

through georgia and virginia. we're going to do it again today and we'll also include areas in the mid-atlantic. a little front trying to stall itself out here. showers in kansas city and thundershowers going through southern portions of alabama. looks like it should miss areas around louisiana and mississippi. if you're heading out to baltimore to redding to philadelphia, especially here in central new jersey, some really heavy downpours and those are trying to drift up here toward long island. so areas throughout no, during your early morning commute, you may deal with some heavy downpour. then we're dealing with leslie. it is still a tropical storm but it has strength rched a little bit. looks like possibly a category 2 hurricane by saturday. if it does we'll have pretty good upcoming waves and the rip current will be very high along the eastern seaboard. surfers will love it but it will be dangerous for anyone going to the beaches. showers along the air yas. look how hot it is still in texas. we'd like to get rid of those 100s. that's a look at your national forecast. now here's a

, virginia has a community and detectives seeking answers. an entire family was found dead inside their home. it's believed this is a case of murder-suicide. >> ken molestina has more on the discovery and the investigation. >> reporter: one by one late in the evening detectives removed the bodies of the family found dead inside their home on the 13000 block of point rider lane in herndon. investigators discovered the bodies of a man and his wife along with their two sons shortly after noon. it's believed this was the result of a murder-suicide. >> shocking to take your other family members, especially the children. it's just heartbreaking. >> reporter: fairfax police are staying tight lipped about the circumstances surrounding the case. they did say they were alerted to the family after both the husband and wife's employers called to say they hadn't sown up to work. neighbors who knew them said they saw them last sometime on sunday. >> they were out here practicing, throwing the baseball. that's the remember time i -- that's the last time i remember seeing them. >> reporter: neighbors descri
